The Term Project (TP) comprises a 10-minute video presentation and final paper.
Students will work in teams of two or three.
Your TP will be on a course topic of your choosing, approved by your instructor BEFORE you start working on it. [Use the TP Declaration form, here in pdf or Word format]
Some Suggested Topics. Here are some ideas for your TP: Choose from the following or come up with a topic of your own.
Application Area. Overview (with examples) of Simulation in <health care, finance, manufacturing, transportation, etc.>
Case Analysis. Simulation of a particular system, including background, model parameters, model building, simulation design and analysis, conclusion. This is often the go-to TP topic area.
Methodology. Simulation with <Java, Python, C++, SIMSCRIPT, Arena, etc.>. Comparison of simulation with another modeling technique. Example [1].
Literature Review. Instead of creating and analyzing a simulation model, consider doing an in-depth literature review of an area that interests you. Guide to conducting and writing up a Literature Review paper may be found here: [PDF] Many of these guidelines can be used for the foundations of your simulation term project.
Examples - Use of Monte Carlo Methods in the banking industry; An overview of scientific research into simulation programming languages; Comparisons of simulation to other techniques; Example [2].

Different topics will require different types of research.
Some projects will require real-world data. One repository may be found at NYC Open Data at https://opendata.cityofnewyork.us/
Submit full description and proposed outline for the presentation and for the final paper.
Prepare your presentation using any apps and media you like. The final presentation must be a video, running approximately 10 minutes. We will discuss different methods of doing this in class. Also see the TP Video FAQ page. Display your TP title at the beginning; also the names of the team members; end with a Sources Used slide. Everyone must have a speaking part – make sure you identify yourself.
TPs will be evaluated based on quality of (1) the content and (2) the presentation. Content includes such considerations as: quality of the research, how interesting is the topic, how thoughtful / insightful are the analyses. Presentation includes such considerations as: is it well organized, is it a professional effort, media used.
Upload your video to YouTube and send your instructor the url, or upload to our course Vocat site and notify instructor when this is done. Video links will be posted to our course website so everyone can view and assess the presentations.
Term projects must also be submitted in hard copy – a final paper that is not necessarily the same thing as the presentation. For example, while the video might include a few slides about a simulation model that you built, the full model itself should be included in the TP report, perhaps in an Appendix if it is very large. Written project must have a cover page; model overview or flow chart; clear discussion of results. Simulation: objective, system, model, data from runs, analysis. You will probably collect data. If you do, make sure you: indicate where the data comes from; its format; how you validated it. Suggested sections include: Intro; Background / Research; Model - description / implementation; validation; experimental design; tactical considerations; Results; Conclusion / Discussion; Future Research.
